Kyivska HPS

Kyivska HPS is the 1st upper stage of the cascade of HPSs located on the river of Dnieper.

Facilities of Kyivska HPS have been under operation since 1964 when the 1st hydropower unit came into service. The last 20th hydropower unit was put into operation in October 1968.

The reservoir of Kyivska HPS is of stream river kind with limited season regulation. Area of watertable of the reservoir is 922 km2. Total volume of the reservoir amounts to 3.73 km3. Useful volume of the reservoir is 1.17 km3.

Facilities of Kyivska integrated hydro scheme comprise the building of HPS with right-bank and left-bank integrated abutments, integrated concrete spillway dam with 20 spillways, navigation lock, earth-fill dams and embankments, outdoor switch-gear with voltage of 110 kV, facilities of HPSS with upper water reservoir.

Total extent of waterfront of hydro facilities of Kyivska integrated hydro scheme is 42.3 km, their throughput - 12500 m3 of water per second.

Kyivska HPS

At Kyivska HPS there installed hydropower units of horizontal capsular type - 4 hydropower units with unit capacity of 16.3 MW including 3 reconstructed units with unit capacity after reconstruction that amounts to 22 MW and 16 hydropower units with unit capacity of 18.5 MW including 3 reconstructed units with unit capacity after reconstruction that amounts to 22 MW. Total installed capacity of Kyivska HPS after reconstruction of the six hydropower units amounts to 38.8 MW.

Hydropower units of Kyivska HPS equipped with turbines of horizontal capsular propeller type: unit capacity of the six rehabilitated turbines amounts to 22 MW, unit capacity of the fourteen non-rehabilitated turbines amounts to 18.5 MW under design pressure of 7.7 m. All turbines installed at Kyivska HPS are produced by Turboatom JSC (Kharkiv, Ukraine).

Generators with voltage of 3.15 kV are produced by Elektrovazhmash (Kharkiv, Ukraine). Capacity of the six rehabilitated generators amounts to 22 MW and that of the fourteen non-rehabilitated generators amounts to 18.5 MW. In the nearest future it is planned to increase voltage of rehabilitated generators (two hydropower units) to 6.3 kV.

The building of Kyivska HPS is integrated with spillways and according to its design is divided into five aggregated units by four hydropower units in each aggregate.

Electric circuit is designed on the basis of stiff units with a step-up transformer of 80 MVA voltage and a switcher from side of the voltage of 110 kV.

Average annual electricity output of Kyivska HPS amounts to 797 mln kWh under operation pressures of 7.7 m (for non-rehabilitated turbines) and 9.3 m (for rehabilitated turbines).

Kyivska HPSS

Kyivska HPSS is located on the right bank of Kyiv water storage at a distance of 2.5 km upstream from Kyivska HPS.

Facilities of Kyivska HPSS have been under operation since 1970 when the 1st hydropower unit became operational. The last 6th hydropower unit came into service in 1972.

The reservoir of Kyivska HPS acts as the lower water reservoir of Kyivska HPSS.

Artificial upper water reservoir of Kyivska HPSS with useful volume of 3.7 mln m3 dug out on the steep bank (1:5) of the river of Dnieper and is 70 m above the level of the reservoir of Kyivska HPS.

Beneath the downhill there is a building of the power station with six vertical hydropower units installed there. Three out of the six hydropower units are combined pump-turbine ones. The building of HPSS is connected with the upper water reservoir with six metal pressure pipelines with diameter of 3.8 m. Installed capacity of the power station is 235 MW in turbine mode and 135 MW in pump mode.

Kyivska HPSS

During daily load schedule fall-through hydropower units operate in pumping mode and during 6-hour term fill up the upper reservoir. During peak load of the power system all six units operate in turbine mode during 2-3 hours. Average annual electricity consumption to fill up water reservoir of the HPSS amounts to 290 mln kWh, and average annual electricity production totals to 200 mln kWh.

Staff of the Cascade of Kyivska HPS and Kyivska HPSS amounted to 377 people as on January 1, 2001.

Currently, reconstruction of basic and auxiliary equipment at the Cascade of Kyivska HPS and Kyivska HPSS according to the partly financed by the World Bank Project of rehabilitation of hydropower stations owned by Dniprogidroenego is underway.
