Dniprovska HPS is the 5th stage of the cascade of HPSs located on the river of Dnieper.

Construction of Dniprovska HPS started in 1927. The first hydropower unit was put into operation in 1932. In 1939 all 10 hydropower units of the station with total capacity of 560 MW came into service.

During Great Patriotic War (1941-45) Dniprovska HPS was completely destroyed. In 1944 reconstruction of the station began and in March 1947 the first hydropower unit of Dniprovska HPS became operational. The last 10th hydropower unit of the renewed station was put into operation in 1950.

On April 22, 1972 construction of the second stage of Dniprovska HPS - Dniprovska HPS - 2 began. In 1974 there was put into operation the first hydropower unit of the station. In 1981 the station became completely operational.

The reservoir of Dniprovska HPS is of stream kind with weekly and daily regulation. Area of watertable of the reservoir is 400 km2. Total volume of the reservoir - 3.32 km3. Useful volume of the reservoir is 0.85 km3.

Dniprovska HPS

Facilities of Dniprovska HPS comprise the pressure-resistant building of HPS, adjoining to the building of HPS shield wall, concrete spillway dam of gravitational kind with 26 spillways, concrete non-overflow dam, navigation facilities, outdoor switch-gear with voltage of 154 kV.

Total extent of waterfront of the hydro facilities of Dniprovska HPS is 1.3 km, their throughput amounts to 269000 m3 of water per second.

At the first stage of Dniprovska HPS there installed 9 vertical hydropower units with total installed capacity of 648 MW and 1 hydropower unit with installed capacity of 2.6 MW.

At the second stage of Dniprovska TPS there installed 8 hydropower units - 6 hydropower units of umbrella type with unit capacity of 104.5 MW (equipped with propeller turbines with unit capacity of 107 MW) and 6 vertical hydropower units of umbrella type with unit capacity of 113.1 MW (equipped with propeller-type wheel turbines with unit capacity of 115 MW) produced by Turboatom JSC (Kharkiv, Ukraine).

Hydropower units of the second stage of Dniprovska HPS equipped with generators with voltage of 13.8 kV produced by Elektrosila (Saint Petersburg, Russia).

Output of electricity is performed by means of the electric circuit consisting of the four units without switches. Every couple of hydropower units of Dniprovska HPS is connected to one transformer and joined into one circuit with voltage of 154 kV.

Average annual electricity output of Dniprovska HPS - 2 amounts to 4008 mln kWh at operational pressure of 34.3 m.

Staff of Dniprovska HPS totaled to 337 persons as on January 1, 2001.

Currently, reconstruction of basic and auxiliary equipment at Dniprovska HPS according to the partly financed by the World Bank Project of rehabilitation of hydropower stations owned by Dniprogidroenergo is underway.
